ART NOUVEAU

Pamela Colman Smith, Rider-Waite Deck, 1909

This Tarot card deck is relevant to the Art Nouveau style as it contains the same very detailed illustrations that are known for the style. Although the works have many curved patterns and intricate lineart, there is a lack of shading that gives this style a more flat look. This set of work is different than previous examples as it is the original tarot card design that many are familiar with today. The above works of art were all made with a clear purpose to illustrate each separate tarot card. Many tarot cards are known today for adopting a similar style that dates back to art nouveau. This set of artwork is important to me as I have been familiar with tarot cards and always thought their artwork was very inspiring. It's fascinating to see elements of the art nouveau style within the original set of tarot cards.
