Saturday 06/24 Design Example

Image
ART NOUVEAU La Passion Christ, Alfonse Mucha, 1904 This work relates to the theme of art nouveau, due to its nuanced attention to artistic flourish. There is special attention to curves in the piece within the robes and the crown of thorns. Not only is the color palette expressive of art nouveau, but the background also features floral motifs and other delicate curves. This work differs from other examples as it is a piece featuring a religious figure, Jesus Christ. Not only is it notable that the main subject is religion, but it is also a man. In many other pieces, females were the ones being placed in the subject with special notice to their curves. This work stood out to me as it featured Jesus Christ, and it was one of the first religious pieces I've seen from this period of time. I find it interesting to see how different art movements work on religious materials. BIBLIOGRAPHY https://www.etsy.com/listing/1008518631/la-passion-christ-1904-alphonse-mucha?utm_medium=display_pr

ART NOUVEAU Henri Privat-Livemont , Absinthe Robette, 1896 This work relates to the theme of art nouveau, as it features the same artistic styles of art nouveau. This includes a neutral color palette, natural flowing curves, and flowing curves. Another element that stands out is the hand-drawn typeface that is familiar with the style. When it comes to the flowing curves, they are showcased through the intricate background and decorated border. There is also a lot of detail within the curves of the female's figure as well as her clothing. The natural folds help highlight the body of the woman. This work stands out and is different than the others as it is actually made to advertise alcohol, absinthe. This alcohol was very popular during this time, and many posters like this one use the art nouveau style as a form of advertisement. Many posters feature a combination of beautiful women with alcohol. This work stood out to me as it functions as an advertisement and it interests me what

ART NOUVEAU Kuba Gornowicz , Coffee Time This work relates to the theme of art nouveau as it has the same delicate and natural features that primarily exist in art nouveau. This can be seen through the flowing natural curves of both the female figure and the steam that is used to enhance the image. The texture of the image also helps make it appear almost vintage, taking the viewer back to the 1900s. Another more obvious detail is the use of a female figure. Despite the poster being about coffee, the female figure takes up almost the entire composition. This example appears different than the rest as it seems to draw influence from more contemporary art. The typeface does not have the same hand-written appeal but is rather a simple sans serif. This font choice helps draw the poster more into the present. I find this image inspiring through its use of highlighting the subject of coffee. Coffee is not even shown; instead, there is a woman, a cup, and steam. With the title, all of these

ART NOUVEAU Élisabeth Sonrel, Flowers Of Water, 1900 This work relates to the theme of art nouveau, firstly by its easily recognizable color palette. Many artists of the time in this art movement stuck to this same color palette. There is also heavy attention to nature, which is seen here through the calm water and varying plant life. The lineart is also all natural with flowing curves and a lack of sharp geometric lines. Another detail that stood out to me is its apparent asymmetrical design. Artists during the art nouveau movement were known to break the symmetrical grid and start working on an asymmetrical composition. This work is different than the others as there is more attention to the subject's whole body as well as clothing. It is easy to notice how the folds and drapery of the fabric are meticulously designed. The figure also appears to be in a contrapposto stance, with careful bends to the knees and elbows. This work stood out to me as the figure seems to be illustr

ART NOUVEAU Art Nouveau Hand Lettering, Katie Johnson This design relates to the art nouveau art style as it contains the same type of lineart and patterns that relates to the style. The color palette also features mainly earth tones, which is a common theme found in art nouveau. Another important factor is the typeface and how it acts as an illustration in itself. The type gives off a hand-drawn characteristic that is common within this time period. This work is different than others as it doesn't feature a large subject within the work. Instead, it focuses heavily on the typeface and lettering. There is no important feminine subject that has been prevalent in earlier examples. However, it still gives off the same aesthetic and impact. This work stood out to me due to the unique typeface. As someone who enjoys typography, I thought the phrase was delivered in a successful way. The patterns and decoration inspire me for my own work. BIBLIOGRAPHY https://www.katiemadethat.com/

Image
ART NOUVEAU Marco Mazzetti lámina Primavera art nouveau + arte pop 2007 This poster is relevant to the Art Nouveau style as it contains a prominent female subject, natural flowing lines, and intricate line art. This poster has little geometric influence, and the typeface also seems natural, almost as if it were hand drawn. Not to mention, the figure lacks natural shading and has a flatter tone that can be seen in many pieces within the theme of art nouveau. This piece is very different as it encompasses art nouveau's style while adding a modern spin to it with the use of neon colors. This piece interested me from the start as it combined two distinct styles, both art nouveau and pop art. I find this to be a very successful mesh of the two styles, and create a unique and captivating work. BIBLIOGRAPHY https://www.flickr.com/photos/mazzettimarco/2118688669/

Image
ART NOUVEAU Pamela Colman Smith,  Rider-Waite Deck, 1909 This Tarot card deck is relevant to the Art Nouveau style as it contains the same very detailed illustrations that are known for the style. Although the works have many curved patterns and intricate lineart, there is a lack of shading that gives this style a more flat look. This set of work is different than previous examples as it is the original tarot card design that many are familiar with today. The above works of art were all made with a clear purpose to illustrate each separate tarot card. Many tarot cards are known today for adopting a similar style that dates back to art nouveau. This set of artwork is important to me as I have been familiar with tarot cards and always thought their artwork was very inspiring. It's fascinating to see elements of the art nouveau style within the original set of tarot cards. BIBLIOGRAPHY https://www.cnn.com/style/article/pamela-colman-smith-tarot-art-whitney/index.html

Image
ART NOUVEAU Poster for Rajah coffee, Henri Meunier, Lithograph, 1897 This poster is relevant to the Art Nouveau style as it has the same natural lineart that this art period is known for. The artwork is also flatter, with a thicker outline and hand-drawn type. As is the case with many art nouveau pieces, this poster also features a beautiful woman. This work differs from other examples as it has a much more flatter tone. The background is one flat color, and while the color palette resembles earth tones, it's much bolder and focuses heavily on red tones. This piece stood out to me due to the fact that it is a poster for coffee. This serves as an advertisement and successfully sells the coffee as a higher class than others.     ART NOUVEAU The Century Magazine: Midsummer Holiday Number, Louis John Rhead, 1894 This poster is relevant to the Art Nouveau style due to its extremely natural style. The thick black lineart featured in the lithograph also adds to the artistic style. The typefaces also appear as though they were hand drawn and outlined. This work differs from previous examples as it has a very intricate background that follows the same style as the main subject. The work also serves as an advertisement for a magazine company. In fact, this piece is unique as the magazine in question is the magazine that the female subject is reading through. This work stood out to me as it is an advertisement from the 1800s for a published work, which is something I have worked on myself. This piece gives me another work to gain inspiration from. Wednesday 06/14 Design Example

Image
ART NOUVEAU Alphonse Mucha, Four Seasons ,  Color lithograph, 1897 This poster is relevant to the Art Nouveau style due to its high emphasis on nature as well as the female figure. This poster is designed to highlight female figures in almost a god-like way. While a previous example was another of Mucha's designs, this one differs as it features four examples of the full female body. His previous example was a profile of a female's face, and it also didn't contain such realistic shading as this piece. This piece is important to me as it emphasizes the power behind both women and nature. I find the comparison of the seasons, plants, and women to give off a captivating message about beauty.    ART NOUVEAU Divan Japonais, Lautrec, Lithographic Poster, 1893 This poster is relevant to the Art Nouveau style based on its focus on natural forms and curves. This poster is much different than others featuring geometric shapes and harsh lines. Instead, the typography flows well and appears almost hand-drawn. This example is different than previous as the color palette is far less complex, with a heavy emphasis on black. In fact, the contrast of colors between the yellow tones and black makes this poster stand out. This poster is important to me as it acts as an advertisement for a cabaret reopening. With my study in graphic design, I've worked a lot with advertising, so it's very interesting to see how advertising methods differed in the late 1800s.  BIBLIOGRAPHY https://justposters.com.au/Divan-Japonais-Lautrec-Poster

Monday 06/12 Design Example

Image
ART NOUVEAU Alphonse Mucha,  Sarah Bernhardt,  Color lithograph, 1897 This poster is relevant to the Art Nouveau style as it features the same style profile. This poster has the earth tone palette that the style is known for and a graceful woman as the subject. The piece highly appeals to nature and features a delicate lineart. This work is different as it portrays a famous actress in this unique style. In doing so, it gives her a more ethereal quality. This example is vital to me as it makes the female subject extremely powerful and almost incorporates nature into the work in a way that commands respect for both the earth and the woman.
